Posted 2006-05-04The Manitoba Curling Association has presented Sport Manitoba Volunteer Service Awards to five of the sports senior volunteer officials.
Recognizing their contributions to the sport of curling as Head Officials at provincial curling championships over a more than 20 year year period, the Sport Manitoba Awards have been presented to Shirley Bray and Wayne Griffin of Brandon, Jack Thompson of Killarney, and Dave Petursson and Danny VandeVyvere of Winnipeg.
Griffin and Bray were recognized Wednesday at the Mayor of Brandon's Volunteer Recognition Reception (pictured l-r are Leanne Traynor, Sport Manitoba Regional Manager - Westman Region; Shirley Bray; Brandon Mayor Dave Burgess; Wayne Griffin; and MCA Regional Director Randy O'Greysik). Petursson, VandeVyvere, and Thompson were honoured Sunday at the MCA's annual Sponsor-Champions Reception.
Curling Hall of Fame member Shirley Bray served as one of Manitoba's first championship officials and was active as an official over a 30 year period. She was also recognized for her contributions as a coach/instructor and as Westman Curl Canada Coordinator.
The other four honourees have all served as championship Head Officials regularly over the past 20+ years. Most recently, Wayne Griffin served as the 2006 Head Official at the Meyers Norris Penny Mixed Championship in Portage and at the Manitoba's Credit Unions Masters Women's Championship in Minnedosa.
Jack Thompson was the Head Official at the 2006 Manitoba's Credit Unions Masters Men's Championship in Minnedosa.
Danny VandeVyvere was Head Official at the 2006 Asham Canadian University Championships as well as at the Pace Setter Senior Women's Championship in Winnipeg.
As well as serving as an official at many national and international championships, Dave Petursson has long served as the Head Official at the Manitoba Men's Championship, including the 2006 Safeway Select in Steinbach. |
