The 2-day camp consists of workshops in the area of Back to the Basics, “Advanced” Technology Training, Specific Positional Training, Sport Psychology, Strength & Conditioning Training and coaching tips.

BACK TO THE BASICS – Athletes will receive an in depth analysis of their set up and delivery.

“ADVANCED” TECHNOLOGY TRAINING – Athletes will receive on-ice training using ‘state of the art’ analysis tools such as computer video analysis software, timing technology systems and heart rate monitors to improve curling performance.

• Video Analysis Software such as Dartfish and/or V1 Home will be used to analyze and compare curling deliveries and brushing techniques. Video analysis is an effective teaching aid to help improve and depict faults of the curling delivery and brushing technique. It will help the curler to learn and understand the technical aspects in depth, and frame by frame, build a picture of what they are trying to achieve. Video analysis can be extremely motivational and will also significantly speed up the learning process.

• Timing Technology Systems such as wired and wireless speed traps will be used to assist the curler to develop consistent weights for particular shots by interval split and rock times.

• Heart Rate Monitors such as Polar watches and chest straps will be used to measure the curler’s cardiovascular and physiological stress during training sessions. They provide an accurate gauge of the intensity of an exercise, which is reflected in the heart rate. The harder the curler trains (i.e. brushes), the higher the heart rate should go. When the heart rate changes, it’s a sign that something is happening. In either case, having this information will assist the curler to properly react and respond. Monitoring the heart rate is the easiest way to keep the curler working in the right “zone”, reducing their chance of injury and over training, and under-training.

SPECIFIC POSITIONAL TRAINING - Athletes will receive on-ice and classroom instruction specific to a curling position. Drills will be used to build the skills necessary for each team position. Common skills like drawing and hitting will be addressed. Roles, rules and common attributes for each team position will be discussed.

• Leader of the Pack – Focus is on developing and understanding the necessary skills to play the LEAD position. Position specific shots such as the “tick” and guards will be discussed and practiced.

• Not Second Choice – Focus is on developing and understanding the necessary skills to play the SECOND position. Position specific shots such as peeling, angle raises, doubles and draws will be discussed and practiced.

• Third Time’s a Charm - Focus is on developing and understanding the necessary skills to play the THIRD position. Position specific shots such as peeling, angle raises, doubles and draws will be discussed and practiced.

• The Best for Last - Focus is on developing and understanding the necessary skills to play the SKIP position. Position specific shots, pressure shots, strategy and tactics will be discussed and practiced.

SPORT PSYCHOLOGY – A classroom session providing sport psychology techniques to assist curlers in alleviating performance anxiety and increasing confidence to perform at their best. Imagery/mental rehearsal will be introduced to enhance performance.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING TRAINING – Athletes will have the opportunity to take part in a one-hour curling specific strength and conditioning session lead by a trained professional.
